Remembering all those passwords &#8211; a little trick that works"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ericlee.info\/blog\/?cat=55\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-788\" style=\"margin-left: 15px; margin-right: 15px;\" alt=\"techtipsfortradeunionists\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ericlee.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/techtipsfortradeunionists.png\" width=\"234\" height=\"72\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ericlee.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/techtipsfortradeunionists.png 447w, https:\/\/www.ericlee.info\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/techtipsfortradeunionists-300x92.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><\/a>There are two basic rules about passwords on the Internet:<\/p>\n<p>1 &#8211; Don&#8217;t use the same password more than once.<\/p>\n<p>2 &#8211; Make sure the password isn&#8217;t an easily-guessable word.\u00a0 Ideally, use a combination of upper and lower case letters and numbers.<\/p>\n<p>So what happens when you have accounts on Amazon, Gmail, eBay, and elsewhere?\u00a0 How do you ensure a minimal level of security?<\/p>\n<p>One way is to write them all down somewhere &#8212; more on this later in this series &#8212; but that&#8217;s insecure by definition.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a better solution: <em><strong>don&#8217;t create passwords &#8212; create a password formula that you always use.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s say you want to have a password for Amazon that&#8217;s different from your password on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Do this &#8212; create a password formula that could be something like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first 2 letters come from the website that you&#8217;re creating the password for &#8212; e.g., &#8216;fa&#8217; for Facebook, &#8216;am&#8217; for Amazon, etc.<\/li>\n<li>The next 2 letters are in upper case and mean something to you, but are not your initials &#8212; e.g., MX or ZP.<\/li>\n<li>Then you add four digits &#8212; not your year of birth! &#8212; but ideally a random set of four digits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The only things that change for the password from site to site are the first two letters.\u00a0 The others stay the same.<\/p>\n<p>So your Amazon password becomes am3759XZ and your Facebook password would be fa3759XZ and so on.<\/p>\n<p>These are different passwords for every website, and they&#8217;re not easily guessable unless you&#8217;ve shared your formula with someone.<\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t need to write them down &#8212; you just need to remember the final 6 characters (in this case, 3759XZ).<\/p>\n<p>It goes without saying that you shouldn&#8217;t stick with any password for very long &#8212; I change mine every month.<\/p>\n<p>And do NOT use this system for your bank or credit card accounts &#8212; you should have a totally separate system for that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are two basic rules about passwords on the Internet: 1 &#8211; Don&#8217;t use the same password more than once. 2 &#8211; Make sure the password isn&#8217;t an easily-guessable word.\u00a0 Ideally, use a combination of&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[55],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-794","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-tech-tips-for-trade-unionists"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ericlee.info\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/794","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ericlee.info\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ericlee.info\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ericlee.info\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ericlee.info\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=794"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.ericlee.info\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/794\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":796,"href":"https:\/\/www.ericlee.info\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/794\/revisions\/796"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ericlee.info\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=794"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ericlee.info\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=794"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ericlee.info\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=794"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
